Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and the southernmost in Europe. Crete is the home of mythology: legend has it that Zeus was born on the island and that one of his sons, Minos, the Minoan king of the splendid palace of Knossos, imprisoned the Minotaur in the labyrinth.
Besides the palace of Knossos, there are many other important and valuable archaeological sites scattered around the island, such as the palace of Phaistos, the palace of Gortis and the palace of Agia Triada. In the archaeological museums of the lively Cretan cities, such as the one in Heraklion, the capital of the island, many of the works found in the palaces are collected.
Besides archaeology, Crete also offers beautiful and varied natural landscapes: its National Parks, its White Mountains and its famous Samaria Gorge are ideal destinations for hikers.
Of course, one cannot miss the seaside resorts with their magnificent sandy beaches with an exotic flavour, washed by azure seas and kissed by a warm sun at sunset.
The island of Crete is divided into four provinces (called peripheral units): Heraklion, the capital, Chania, Sitia and Rethymnon.
