The beautiful island of Milos was until a few years ago a hidden treasure but more and more tourists are choosing it as their holiday destination. There is a small airport on the island but it is only served by domestic flights, so to get to Milos you need to take a flight and either a ferry or a flight with a stopover.
Where to fly and from where to take the ferry? There are several possibilities, below we describe the cheapest and quickest plus a couple of other solutions that you might find interesting.
The cheapest way to reach Milos is to take a flight to Athens, travel to the port of Piraeus and from there board a ferry or hydrofoil to your destination island.
The port of Piraeus is easily reached from Athens airport in an hour to an hour and a half by public transport. The duration of the sea crossing varies greatly depending on the company and the type of ship: allow two and a half to seven hours.
Choose the hydrofoil if you want to arrive in the shortest possible time; take the ferry instead if you want to save money. For both choices in the high season months you can choose from several daily trips.
Flights to AthensIf you want to reduce your sailing time, book a flight to the nearest international airport to Milos, namely Santorini. From this island, frequent hydrofoils depart and will take you to your destination in just two hours.
The solution flight to Santorini and then hydrofoil is therefore the fastest way to get to Milos, but flights to Santorini are likely to cost more than flights to Athens.
Flights to SantoriniApart from Athens and Santorini, the other airport fairly close to Milos with direct flights is Mykonos. Getting to Milos from Mykonos, however, is quite complicated: the hours of sailing by hydrofoil are a good six and the cost of the ticket is quite expensive.
Better to opt for another solution, unless you wish to visit both islands, which are very different.
Flights to MykonosYou can get to Milos by plane by taking a domestic flight from Athens or the island of Crete, both of which are connected by direct flights.
Milos is located in the centre of the Western Cyclades and can easily be reached by boat from the nearest islands, namely Sifnos, Serifos, Folegandros, Ios and Santorini.
There are also ferries to the other islands, but they are less frequent. Check the timetables if you are planning a multi-island holiday.
