Mykonos is a dream destination for LGBTQ+ travellers. No other Greek island, and few other locations in the Mediterranean, can boast such a long history of gay tourism as Mykonos, an island where the LGBTQ+ community can spend their holidays in freedom without feeling ghettoised and without having to lock themselves away in exclusively dedicated bars and beaches.
In every beach and bar on Mykonos you can enjoy yourself without embarrassment and in complete safety, but if you want to make new friends, head for the island’s most popular gay-friendly beaches and bars. A distinctive feature of Mykonos’ gay bars is that many of them are located in the Chora (the old town of the main town) and feature typical Cycladic architecture, allowing LGBTQ+ tourists to fully experience the local culture.
Mykonos is not only fun and transgression: the island is also synonymous with romance, luxury and inclusiveness. A growing trend sees Mykonos as a favourite destination for LGBTQ+ couples on their honeymoon, attracted by the idea of spending their honeymoon nights in luxurious designer hotels or exclusive villas with infinity pools.

An unwritten but often respected rule on the beaches of Mykonos is that the area to the right is the most frequented by the gay community, so even on a mixed beach it is easy to find a corner where you can make interesting encounters.
The remote beaches in beautiful natural settings are perfect for those who are already in a couple and want some privacy, while the more transgressive beaches are the ideal place to have a lot of fun, with excellent opportunities for encounters.
Elia Beach is one of the most popular and popular with gay holidaymakers on the island and one of the best gay beaches in Europe. It is a beach of fine white sand, frequented by gays of all ages who come here in search of summer adventures. In summer it is very crowded and if you want to guarantee yourself a beach umbrella, we recommend that you reserve one. Next to Elia Beach is a smaller, more intimate beach, often frequented by nudists.
Another popular beach for gay tourists on Mykonos is Super Paradise Beach, which is considered even more transgressive than the neighbouring Paradise Beach. Together the two beaches form the nerve centre of Mykonos’ nightlife, lined with legendary beach bars and clubs where the music and fun starts in the afternoon and goes on until the morning of the next day.
For a more relaxed atmosphere better move to Agrari Beach, a rocky beach popular with nudists. The ambience is wilder and less commercialised than the main beaches.
The most remote of all the gay beaches on Mykonos is Kalafatis, a long sandy beach battered by winds and therefore perfect for kitesurfing. A row of pine trees partially protects the beach from the wind, so it is possible to sunbathe without being entirely covered in sand.
The most popular cruising area on Mykonos is the rocky area around the Panagia Paraportiani church, not far from the Jackie O’ Bar, popular with the gay community.
The best gay club on Mykonos is definitely the Jackie O’, an elegant two-storey disco-bar with a large sea-view terrace on the seafront promenade in Mykonos Town: a true legend of gay tourism on the island, famous for its drag queen shows. Some tourists complain that the repertoire of the shows is a bit dated, others appreciate the vintage charm of the shows, but for everyone Jackie O’ is a must. It fills up around midnight.
If you prefer a more lively beach party atmosphere head to Jackie O’ Beach Bar on Super Paradise Beach, perfect for day parties and fun in the sun.
The LGBTQ+ nightlife scene in Mykonos has become very diverse in recent years, with a variety of venues to suit all tastes:
XLSIOR is the gay festival on the island of Mykonos. Founded in 2009 by Anastasios Kapetanias, in just a few years it has achieved such stellar popularity that as soon as one edition is over, tickets for the following year are already on sale.
The gay summer festival XLSIOR usually takes place after mid-August and has reached an annual attendance of 30,000, growing steadily. The festival includes:
XLSIOR hosts top DJs from the international circuit such as Tom Stephan, Offer Nissim, Phil Romano, Ben Bakson and Nina Flowers. The festival uses the most spectacular locations in Mykonos, from Cavo Paradiso to Paradise Beach, from Elia Beach to the ZeNIT Events Centre.
Beware that during XLSIOR hotel prices go up dramatically and many venues sell out, so booking well in advance is essential.
More and more LGBTQ+ families with children are choosing Mykonos as their holiday destination for therelaxed atmosphere of the island, theunprejudiced hospitality of the locals and the family-friendly attractions.
