Mykonos Climate in: best time to visit, weather by month, temperature

Arid and barren, thanks also to its granite soil, the island of Mykonos has a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and dry, hot summers so that fauna and vegetation are scarce on the island, although very varied. The hottest month of the year is July when temperatures can easily exceed 40 degrees Celsius, while in August they tend to drop slightly, still remaining high, because it is very windy.

Also called the Island of the Winds, Mykonos due to its geographical position is caressed by the Meltemi summer wind that blows from the north mitigating the temperatures and relieving the tourists. During winter, the island is swept by the Sirocco, a southerly wind that carries sand from the southern shores of the Mediterranean.

Mykonos has over 300 days of sunshine a year and rainfall is very minimal. Good weather will accompany you uninterruptedly from April to September when temperatures never drop below 20° Celsius.

When to go to Mykonos

Popular as a holiday destination for its climate, beaches and nightlife, Mykonos is one of the Mediterranean tourist destinations suitable for much of the year thanks to the more than 300 days of sunshine that kiss this land part of the Cyclades archipelago.

Spring, especially after the Orthodox Easter, is the ideal time to plan your Mykonos holiday: the air and sea are warming up, the beaches are calm and the island’s landscape is green and lively. If you are looking for a hectic nightlife, however, we advise you to wait until the high season. Also good months for your holiday are May and June during which the temperatures are not stifling, the island is starting to fill up and have fun, and the beaches are still crowd-free.

July and August are the most touristy months and the island teems with people sunbathing and partying. Temperatures during these months can fluctuate dramatically. July is the hottest month, but by early August, the Meltemi, the wind that blows over the island from the north, creates a refreshing breeze and ripples the sea that attracts many surfers.

September is a beautiful month to visit Mykonos: the fine weather does not leave the island, temperatures are more moderate and the crowds of tourists are just a memory. In October the temperatures are pleasant and the sea is warm enough and ideal for a solitary swim, the only drawback being a few downpours.

From November until the beginning of March, temperatures drop to 9 degrees and southerly winds blow. These are the wettest months but the sun shines every day and temperatures are never cold.
