Agios Prokopios is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Cyclades and is the jewel of the west coast of Naxos. This magnificent stretch of golden sand stretches for over 1.2 kilometres along the south-west coast of the island, just 5 kilometres from the main port of Chora.
The beach owes its name to the small nearby church of Agios Prokopios, dedicated to the 4th century martyr saint. The crystal-clear waters that bathe this coastline have a deep turquoise blue colour that contrasts beautifully with the fine sand of volcanic origin, creating a scenery that has won numerous international awards.
Agios Prokopios is distinguished by its privileged western exposure, which naturally protects it from the strong Meltemi winds that blow during the summer from northern directions. The most convenient way to reach Agios Prokopios is by public KTEL buses that depart regularly from the port of Naxos (Chora). During the summer season, runs are frequent with departures every 30-45 minutes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the journey takes about 15 minutes. The bus stop is located directly on the main road along the beach.
With a rented car, the route is simple and well-marked: from the town of Naxos, follow the coastal road towards the south-west for about 6 kilometres. The route offers spectacular views of the coast and takes about 10 minutes drive. Along the main road there are several free car parks shaded by eucalyptus trees, which are particularly appreciated during the hottest hours of the day.
From the airport of Naxos, located about 3 kilometres from the beach, it is possible to reach Agios Prokopios by taxi in 8 minutes or by public bus by changing at the port. From the main port, where ferries from the other Cyclades islands dock, the distance is only 5 kilometres.
A popular alternative for visitors is to hire a scooter or quad bike, which makes it easy to explore the nearby beaches and enjoy the sea breeze on the way. The road is in excellent condition and suitable even for less experienced drivers.
The area of Agios Prokopios and Plaka represents the heart of accommodation on the west coast of Naxos, with a concentration of establishments ranging from luxury boutique hotels to cosy family pensions.
