Renting a car in Paros is the key to discovering all the beauty of this fascinating Cycladic island, the third largest in the archipelago after Andros and Naxos. With its 120 kilometres of coastline and an area of about 196 square kilometres, Paros offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes, ranging from the golden beaches of the west coast to the wilder and more sheltered coves of the east side.

The island has a hilly morphology dominated by Mount Agioi Pantes, with a hinterland rich in traditional villages such as Lefkes, Prodromos and Marpissa, some 15-20 kilometres away from the main coastal centres. The road network of Paros is well developed and easily connects the two main towns, Parikia and Naoussa, with the hinterland and the more remote beaches, making the car the ideal means to explore every corner of the island.

Unlike other more compact Cycladic islands, Paros requires a longer commute to reach the various attractions: from the granite formations of Kolymbithres to the windy beaches of Golden Beach to the 80-hectare Paros Park trails. A hire car will give you the freedom of movement you need to discover both the most famous tourist spots and the hidden treasures of the hinterland.

Having a car will allow you to easily reach the different beaches depending on wind conditions and your preferences, optimising your days at the beach.

Travel information

Where to rent a car in Paros

Paros Airport

Paros Airport (PAS), located about 10 kilometres from the centre of Parikia, is the most convenient option for those arriving by domestic flights from Athens. The airport is home to several international car rental companies including Europcar, Sixt, Budget and specialised local companies such as Chaniotis Paros Car hires. The main advantage of picking up at the airport is the 24-hour availability during the summer season and the convenience to start exploring the island immediately.

Companies at the airport generally offer a full range of services, including GPS, child seats, and additional insurance. It is important to book in advance, especially during July and August, when demand often exceeds supply. Paros airport handles mainly domestic and seasonal flights, so most international visitors will still have to transit through Athens.

Parking at the airport is free of charge and well organised, facilitating vehicle pick-up and drop-off. The road from the airport to Parikia is well paved and signposted, allowing a quick and safe transfer to the centre of the island.

Port of Paros (Parikia)

The port of Parikia is the main arrival point for most visitors travelling to Paros by ferry from Piraeus, Rafina or the other islands of the Cyclades. Numerous car rental companies have offices in the immediate vicinity of the harbour or offer free delivery directly to the pier, facilitating the collection of the vehicle immediately after disembarkation.

Companies such as Imperial Car hire and Paros European Rent offer full services with 24-hour delivery at the port, including unlimited kilometres, basic insurance and roadside assistance. The advantage of renting at the port is logistical convenience: you can pick up the car immediately upon arrival and avoid transfers with luggage.

During the summer, the port of Paros handles about 20 ferries a day, making it one of the busiest in the Cyclades. This can create congestion at peak hours, but car rental companies are well organised to handle the flow of tourists. It is advisable to let them know your ferry arrival time in advance to coordinate vehicle pick-up.

Centre of Parikia and Naoussa

Renting a car in the centre of Parikia or in Naoussa can be convenient for those who have already reached their accommodation and wish to explore the island for just a few days. Numerous local agencies can be found along the main streets of both cities, often offering competitive prices and a more personalised service than international companies.

Agencies in the centre often provide detailed maps of the island and advice on the best itineraries, based on local knowledge. In Naoussa, in particular, some companies offer free delivery to local hotels and additional services such as water sports equipment rental.

Renting in the city centre allows you to physically assess the vehicle before collection and receive detailed explanations on roads and destinations directly from local staff. However, it may be less convenient for those arriving at the airport or port with a lot of luggage.

Driving in Paros

Driving in Paros is generally a pleasant and safe experience, thanks to a well-maintained road network that effectively connects all points of interest on the island. The main road that crosses the island from Parikia to Naoussa, continuing to Alyki, is completely paved and has adequate carriageways for two-way traffic.

The secondary roads leading to inland villages such as Lefkes, Prodromos and Marpissa are also paved but narrower, with bends and climbs that require attention. Some unpaved roads lead to more remote beaches such as Glyfa Beach or parts of the east coast, but are generally passable by normal cars during the dry season.

Speed limits follow Greek regulations: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on main suburban roads. Traffic in Paros is generally smooth, even during the high season, except during peak hours in Parikia during ferry arrivals and departures. There are road signs in both Greek and English for the main destinations.

Parking is not a significant problem: Parikia and Naoussa have free parking areas in residential areas, while the old town centres of both cities have easily recognisable restricted traffic zones. The island’s main beaches have free, unattended parking areas, generally located 50-200 metres from the shore. During the high season, popular beaches such as Kolymbithres and Golden Beach may be crowded in the middle hours.

Recommended itineraries in Paros

West Coast Beaches Tour

The western beaches tour is the classic route to discover the most famous and accessible beaches of Paros. Start the tour from Livadia Beach (5 minutes from Parikia), the main urban beach, ideal for a sea-view breakfast before heading off to more spectacular destinations.

Continue to Kolymbithres (15 minutes from Parikia), the island’s most iconic beach, famous for granite formations shaped by wind and sea that create natural pools of incredible beauty. The smooth rocks offer perfect spots to relax and take unique photos, while the shallow, crystal-clear waters are ideal for families with children.

Continue to Monastiri Beach (20 minutes from Parikia), dominated by the monastery of Agios Ioannis Detis that stands on a rocky promontory. This beach combines natural beauty and spirituality, offering the opportunity to visit the monastery and enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the bay.

End the day at Santa Maria (25 minutes from Parikia), the trendiest beach on Paros, famous for its summer nightlife and music events. With its golden sand and views of Naxos, Santa Maria is perfect for a sunset aperitif.

This route covers about 50 kilometres round trip and can be comfortably completed in a day.

Hinterland and Traditional Villages

Exploring the hinterland of Paros offers a journey back in time through villages that retain the atmosphere of traditional Greece. Start the tour by heading to Lefkes (20 minutes from Parikia), the island’s ancient capital located at an altitude of 300 metres. This mountain village, considered one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades, is built like a natural amphitheatre with marble-paved alleys and the majestic church of Agia Triada with its two bell towers.

From Lefkes, follow the Byzantine Trail or drive to Prodromos (10 minutes from Lefkes), an even more authentic village where time seems to stand still. The traditional houses, small cafes and relaxed atmosphere will immerse you in the daily life of the Parthians. Continue to Marpissa (15 minutes from Prodromos), famous for its taverns serving local specialities prepared according to recipes handed down through generations.

Don’t miss Kostos (20 minutes from Marpissa), a small agricultural village where you can observe the traditional production of olive oil and wine. The village offers spectacular views of the Paros countryside and neighbouring islands. Conclude the itinerary with a visit to the Paros Environmental and Cultural Park (25 minutes from Kostos), which covers 80 hectares and offers hiking trails among Mediterranean flora and minor archaeological sites.

This route covers about 80 kilometres and allows you to discover the authentic soul of Paros, far from the tourist beaches.

East Coast and Adventure

The east coast of Paros represents the wildest and windiest side of the island, perfect for lovers of water sports and unspoilt landscapes. Start your adventure by heading to Golden Beach (25 minutes from Parikia), a stretch of golden sand almost a kilometre long, famous for hosting world windsurfing competitions. The beach offers windsurfing and kitesurfing schools with rental equipment and qualified instructors.

Continue to New Golden Beach (5 minutes from Golden Beach), less crowded but just as spectacular, ideal for those seeking tranquillity while remaining in a setting of natural excellence. Continue along the coast to Logaras (15 minutes from New Golden Beach), another windy beach that is particularly popular with kite surfers because of its optimal wind conditions.

Move on to Piso Livadi (20 minutes from Logaras), a picturesque fishing village on the east coast, famous for its fresh fish restaurants and family atmosphere. The harbour offers the possibility of booking boat trips to the Lesser Cyclades (Antiparos, Koufonissia, Iraklia).

Conclude the itinerary with Glyfa Beach (30 minutes from Piso Livadi), a semi-hidden beach reached via a dirt road. This wild cove, frequented mainly by locals, offers an authentic and unspoilt atmosphere, perfect for relaxing in the shade of tamarisks with a book.

This route of about 90 kilometres will let you discover the more adventurous and sporty side of Paros.
