Ancient Fira

Ancient Fira lies between the beaches of Kamari and Perissa, perched on Mount Mesa Vouno, and is famous for its Terrace of Festivals, two Agora, the Temple of Dionysus and the Sanctuary of Apollo.

Ancient Fira (or Ancient Thera), one of Santorini’s most fascinating archaeological treasures, stands majestically on the promontory of Mesa Vouno at 396 metres above sea level, between the famous beaches of Kamari and Perissa. Founded in the 9th century B.C. by Doric colonists from Sparta led by King Theras (who gave his name to the city and the island), this ancient polis is an extraordinary testimony to the island’s millennial history. Its strategic position, on a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea, made the city easily defensible and allowed it to control the surrounding sea routes.

Abandoned for good in 726 A.D. following a volcanic eruption, today Ancient Thira gives us a journey through time through the different eras that marked its history: from the Doric period to the Hellenistic period, from the Roman age to the Byzantine era. The site stretches for almost a kilometre in length and 150 metres in width, offering visitors the opportunity to explore numerous buildings and monuments that tell of the daily, religious and political life of the ancient city.

For history and archaeology enthusiasts, but also for those seeking breathtaking views and an authentic connection to Santorini’s past, Ancient Fira is a must-see during a stay on the island.

Things to do at the archaeological site

Walking along the main road through the ancient settlement, you will be immediately captivated by the unique atmosphere of this place suspended between sky and sea. The site unfolds along a path that will lead you to the discovery of testimonies from different eras, all perfectly integrated into the breathtaking landscape of the promontory.

The heart of the city is represented by the two Agorai, public squares where civic and commercial life took place. Not to be missed is the impressive Terrace of the Feasts, a large panoramic space where celebrations in honour of Apollo once took place, now offering visitors a spectacular view of the Aegean Sea.

Among the most significant religious buildings are the Temple of Dionysus and the Sanctuary of Apollo Karneios, deities particularly worshipped by Doric settlers. The Sanctuary of Artemidorus, carved directly into the rock, still preserves epigrams and carvings depicting divine symbols such as the eagle of Zeus and the dolphin of Poseidon.

Roman influence can be seen in the baths, while the defensive walls and the small church of Agios Stefanos, one of the oldest Christian buildings on the island, remain from the Byzantine period. Strolling among these millenary remains, you will breathe in the living history of Santorini in one of its most authentic and least touristy places.

How to get to Ancient Fira

The archaeological site of Ancient Fira is strategically located between the seaside resorts of Kamari and Perissa, on top of Mount Mesa Vouno. There are several ways to reach this fascinating historical site:

From Kamari

The most convenient option is to take the bus that leaves from Kamari about every hour. The service operates regularly during the tourist season and will take you directly to the entrance of the archaeological site.

Alternatively, you can rent a car or scooter and follow the asphalt road up towards Mesa Vouno. The route is well signposted and offers extraordinary views on the way up. Once at the car park, you will have to walk a short distance to the entrance of the site.

From Perissa

From Perissa it is possible to undertake a hike on foot by following the path up the southern slope of Mesa Vouno. The path is steep and rocky, requiring about 45 minutes of uphill walking and is only recommended for people in good physical condition and with appropriate footwear. However, the effort will be rewarded with spectacular views of the sea and the southern coast of the island.

Again, it is possible to opt for a motorised vehicle and follow the road from Perissa to the archaeological site.

From Fira and other locations

If you are staying in Fira or other localities on the island, the best option is to rent a means of transport or use the public bus service KTEL. In this case, you will first have to reach Kamari or Perissa, and from there continue to Ancient Fira as indicated above.

For a more complete and informative experience, you can consider the option of a guided tour that includes a visit to the archaeological site. These tours often include transport to and from your accommodation and the presence of an expert guide who can enrich your visit with historical and cultural details.

Other archaeological sites on Santorini

For archaeology enthusiasts, the archaeological site of Akrotiri is another must-see. Located in the south-western part of the island, this ancient Minoan settlement, buried by the volcanic eruption of the 17th century B.C., has been remarkably preserved by volcanic ash, so much so that it has been nicknamed the ‘Greek Pompeii’. Excavations have unearthed multi-storey buildings, extraordinary frescoes and objects of everyday life that offer a unique insight into the Cycladic civilisation of the Bronze Age.

The Museums of Fira

To complete your historical-archaeological tour, we recommend a visit to the museums of Fira, the capital of Santorini. The Archaeological Museum exhibits artefacts from Ancient Fira, while the Museum of Prehistoric Thira houses important evidence of the island’s prehistoric period, including some of the frescoes found at Akrotiri. These museums will allow you to contextualise and deepen what you observed during your visit to the archaeological sites.
