Positioned along the south-eastern coast of Santorini, 14 kilometres from the island’s capital Fira, the village of Perissa has a stunning black sand beach that continues uninterrupted southwards until it becomes Perivolos Beach, with which it actually forms one impressive shoreline. The contrast between the deep black of the sand and the deep blue of the sea creates a visually stunning backdrop, made all the more striking by the presence of the imposing Mesa Vouno looming in the background.

Perissa offers a perfect balance of seaside relaxation and bustling tourist life. Unlike the resorts on the caldera such as Oia and Fira, Perissa offers a more affordable experience while providing all the comforts and services for an unforgettable holiday.

In summer, it is crowded with holidaymakers who, despite fewer hotels than in Kamari, find accommodation in the various local guesthouses.

Perissa is known for its vibrant holiday atmosphere that attracts visitors of all ages. The promenade is dotted with taverns, restaurants, cafés and bars offering local and international cuisine at lower prices than in the resorts on the caldera. Despite its popularity among tourists, Perissa retains a certain authentic charm, especially in the shoulder months when the atmosphere becomes more relaxed and one can better appreciate the pace of life on the island.

The black beach of Perissa

The main beach of Perissa is rightly considered to be one of the most beautiful in Santorini and the entire Cycladic archipelago. The shoreline stretches for about 7 km (including the continuation to Perivolos) and consists of characteristic black sand of volcanic origin that contrasts beautifully with the deep blue Aegean Sea. The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag for the cleanliness of its waters and the quality of its services.

The sea at Perissa slopes gently, making it particularly suitable for families with children. The beach is well organised with numerous bathing establishments offering sunbeds and umbrellas, public showers, changing rooms and various refreshment areas. It should be noted that the black sand tends to heat up considerably during the hottest hours of the summer day, so it is advisable to wear appropriate footwear.

Along the beach there are beach bars and taverns where you can enjoy Greek specialities and international dishes, often with a sea view. During the high season (June-September), these venues organise events and musical evenings that enliven the area’s nightlife.

A distinctive feature of Perissa beach is the spectacular backdrop created by Mesa Vouno, the mountain that separates it from neighbouring Kamari. This rock formation not only offers an impressive panorama but is also home to the ruins of the ancient city of Thera, which can be reached via a hiking trail that starts at Perissa.

For water sports enthusiasts, the beach offers numerous possibilities: from windsurfing to paddle boarding, from jet skiing to scuba diving. Several local operators offer equipment rental and lessons for beginners. Wind conditions in the afternoon are often ideal for windsurfing, while the calm waters in the morning are perfect for snorkelling or kayaking along the coast.

Things to do and do in Perissa

Besides the beautiful beach, Perissa offers numerous activities and attractions to make your holiday on Santorini even more memorable.

The Church of St Irene (Agia Irini), after which Perissa is named, is a fine example of Cycladic architecture with its distinctive blue dome and white walls. The interior, decorated with frescoes and traditional iconostasis, is worth a visit, especially during religious celebrations when one can experience an authentic moment of local culture.

One of the main attractions of Perissa is the access to Ancient Thera, an archaeological site of great importance located on top of Mesa Vouno. This settlement, founded in the 8th century B.C. and inhabited until the Byzantine period, offers a fascinating insight into the island’s history. A hiking trail leads from Perissa to the ruins, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the island’s south-eastern coastline along the way. The hike requires about 45-60 minutes of uphill walking and good physical fitness, so it is advisable to start early in the morning to avoid the intense heat.

For those who prefer less strenuous activities, the centre of Perissa offers several shopping options, with souvenir shops, clothing boutiques and jewellers selling creations inspired by Cycladic art. Many beach establishments organise recreational activities such as beach volleyball, yoga on the beach at sunset or Greek cooking lessons.

Food lovers will appreciate the many restaurants and tavernas offering local specialities such as Santorini fava (a puree of pulses), local cherry tomatoes, melitzanosalata (aubergine sauce) and fresh seafood. Many locals organise Greek evenings with traditional music and dancing, offering an authentic cultural experience.

A few kilometres from Perissa is the Santorini Water Park, a pleasant alternative for families with children or for those who want a break from the beach. The park offers several pools, slides and water games for all ages.

For wine enthusiasts, there are several wineries around Perissa that produce the famous wines of Santorini, especially Assyrtiko. Many offer guided tours and tastings that will allow you to discover the special ‘kouloura’ (basket-shaped) vine cultivation method, adapted to protect the vines from the strong winds and droughts typical of the island.

One of the most impressive experiences to have in Perissa is to watch the sunset from the beach. Although not as famous as Oia for this natural spectacle, the sight of the sun setting behind Mesa Vouno, with its reflections on the sea and black sand, creates a magical and less crowded atmosphere.

Where to stay in Perissa

Perissa offers a wide range of accommodation solutions for all budgets, representing one of the areas of Santorini with the best value for money.

The most popular area to stay is along the seafront, where you will find hotels and flats with direct beach views. These facilities offer the convenience of direct access to the sea and restaurants and services within walking distance. Many beachfront hotels have private swimming pools, a particularly appreciated feature considering that the sea water can be cool even in summer.

For those looking for cheaper but still comfortable solutions, the area slightly set back from the beach offers numerous family pensions, flats and small hotels at lower prices. These accommodations are generally located a 5-10 minute walk from the sea and offer a more authentic experience of local life.

One of the most appreciated features of accommodation in Perissa is the presence of swimming pools in many facilities, even those of the budget category. This is a significant advantage over other parts of the island, where swimming pools are usually only available in luxury hotels at much higher prices.

The main advantage of staying in Perissa compared to resorts on the caldera such as Fira and Oia is definitely the cost. Accommodation in Perissa can cost 30% to 50% less than equivalent establishments in more touristy areas, while still offering excellent standards of comfort. This difference becomes even more marked during the high season (July-August).

For families, accommodation in Perissa is particularly recommended due to its proximity to a safe beach, numerous restaurants with children’s menus and the overall more relaxed atmosphere compared to other parts of the island.
