Pyrgos

Built on a hilltop in the centre of Santorini, the village of Pyrgos offers a splendid all-round panoramic view of the island and the caldera, reaching as far as the village of Oia.

This traditional village is located 8 kilometres south-east of Fira, the island’s capital, and still retains the characteristics of a Venetian fortification: Pyrgos was one of the five fortified villages built on Santorini in the 1400s by the Venetians and the castle that towers above the village can still be admired today.

A labyrinth of winding paths that follow the shape of the hill, small traditional white houses built around the castle and fascinating art galleries located in hidden corners make the village of Pyrgos an ideal place for your holiday!

There are also many Byzantine churches in Pyrgos, the most notable of which are the frescoed Theotokaki and the Monastery of the Prophet Elijah, which stands atop the mountain of the same name four kilometres from the village.

Relatively developed, Pyrgos nonetheless offers a good selection of hotels and flats for rent, all enriched by the splendid views of the island and the Aegean Sea. The sunsets are breathtaking and the beaches of Kamari and Perissa are only a few kilometres from the village.

The Easter festivities are splendid: on Good Friday, Megali Paraskevi, the entire village is lit up with torches, creating a very impressive scene, and on Easter Sunday, Kyriaki tou Pascha, an effigy is first burnt in the main square of the village, then beautiful fireworks are set off and finally a feast of spit-roasted lamb and wine is consumed.

At the entrance to the village of Pyrgos is the largest winery on the island, where tastings can be enjoyed on the beautiful terrace with its breathtaking view.

Things to do in Pyrgos

The Kasteli of Pyrgos dominates the village from its summit position and is the best preserved of the five Venetian castles that once protected the island. Built around 1580, this fortified castle offers extraordinary panoramic views over the whole of Santorini and is a perfect example of medieval military architecture. Its labyrinthine alleys lead to the Church of Panagia Eisodion, located at the highest point and built in 1660-1661, which houses precious icons and a finely carved wooden iconostasis.

The village boasts over 40 churches scattered in its alleys, including the Church of Theotokaki, one of the oldest on the island dating back to the 10th century, and the Church of Agia Theodosia, dedicated to the patron saint of Santorini’s castles. Each religious building recounts centuries of devotion and tradition, with the characteristic blue domes creating striking colour contrasts with the immaculate white walls. The Monastery of the Prophet Elijah, reached by a 30-45 minute walk to the summit of the mountain, houses an important collection of icons and relics and offers breathtaking views of the entire archipelago.

How to get to Pyrgos

Pyrgos enjoys a strategic central location that makes it easily accessible from anywhere on Santorini. Due to Pyrgos’ central location on the island of Santorini, most places can be reached within 15-20 minutes by car.

From Santorini Airport

From Santorini Airport the journey takes about 15-20 minutes by car or taxi. A bus stop is located between the arrivals and departures buildings. Buses from there take visitors to the central bus station in the village of Fira, which is 5 km away.

By public transport: Take the bus to Fira and then change to the bus for Pyrgos on the Fira-Akrotiri line. Buses leave approximately every hour from the airport.

From the Port of Athinios

The port is about 15 minutes by car from the village. Those arriving by ferry to Santorini can take the bus to Fira and then change for Pyrgos.

From Fira

The capital is only 10 minutes away by car and the bus connection is frequent throughout the day. Buses follow the Fira-Akrotiri route with a stop in Pyrgos.
