Diafani is a charming fishing village located in the northern part of Karpathos, whose name derives from the Greek word ‘diaphanous’ meaning transparent, a reference to the crystal-clear waters that characterise this seaside resort. Surrounded by a landscape of rare beauty, this small village is a perfect retreat for those seeking tranquillity and authenticity, far from the beaten tourist routes of the Dodecanese.

The village is built around a small square directly behind the beach, with two benches that have become the most photographed in Greece, a few traditional tavernas and little else. This simplicity is precisely the charm of Diafani: here you will find no shopping centres or hectic nightlife, only the purest essence of authentic Greece.

The watchword in Diafani, as in the neighbouring villages of Olympos and Avlona, is ‘slow down’. The northern area of Karpathos is ideal for getting in touch with nature, where time seems to stand still and the rhythms of life still follow the ancient rhythms of the Aegean Sea.

Beaches in and around Diafani

The main beach of Diafani is a small, quiet expanse of grey pebbles overlooking the small harbour, characterised by crystal-clear waters that perfectly reflect the meaning of the village’s name. This beach has an undeniable charm, and despite its small size and composition of pebbles rather than sand, it offers a crystal-clear, diaphanous view of the sea that is hard to forget.

Papa Beach is located a short distance south of the village and can be reached by a short walk along the coast. This unequipped beach is considered one of the best in the area for those seeking a more intimate and authentic experience. The waters here are particularly clear and the seabed slopes gently, making it ideal for long, relaxing swims.

To the north of the village is Vananda, an unequipped and rather lonely beach that offers the opportunity to enjoy moments of absolute relaxation. From Diafani it is an easy walk along coastal paths to the beaches of Vananda and Papa Minas, among the closest and most attractive in the area.

The beaches of Agios Minas offer an alternative equipped with taverns and bars for those who want more comfort. All the beaches in the northern area are characterised by small pebbles rather than sand, but the crystal-clear water and unspoilt environment more than compensate for this.

Things to do and do in Diafani

Boat trips to the uninhabited island of Saria, located only 100 metres away, depart daily from the small port of Diafani. These trips are the area’s main excursion, allowing you to explore otherwise inaccessible beaches such as Alimounda and Palatia, as well as the remains of the ancient village of Argos and the impressive mountaintop church of St Sophia.

Excursions to the northern beaches of Karpathos depart every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 10:30am, including lunch on the beach and return at 6pm. During these excursions you can visit bays such as Opsi, Forokli, Kapi and Nati, where you can often find yourself in total solitude with nature.

The village of Olympos, only 7 kilometres away and reachable by car or bus, is an unmissable destination to admire a magnificent sunset and to taste the famous makarunes, the typical handmade macaroni of the local tradition. Olympos can also be reached via a pleasant 5-kilometre gentle descent on foot from Diafani.

The church of Zoodochos Pigi in Diafani is one of the most beautiful religious architectures of Karpathos, characterised by beautiful frescoes and an ideal place to rest after a day in the sun.

For trekking enthusiasts, the area offers the 13-kilometre-long Diafani-Diavlos-Tristomo trail, which can be walked in 3-4 hours, with unique views and an easy route. The area is ideal for medium-advanced trekking routes, fully immersing oneself in the wild nature of the island.

Where to stay in Diafani

Diafani is an excellent option for those looking for flats and accommodation directly by the sea, offering a quieter atmosphere than the main town of Pigadia. The area has limited but quality accommodation, mainly consisting of studios, flats and small family-run guesthouses.

The fishing village of Diafani is situated in one of the most picturesque areas of the island, with impressive landscapes behind it and several well-preserved old mansions along the coast. Staying in Diafani or Olympos reduces the travelling radius and is not suitable for those who want to tour the whole island, but it can be a good choice for a few days’ stay dedicated to discovering the northern part of Karpathos.

How to reach Diafani

Diafani is connected by sea to Pigadia by daily excursions that leave in the morning and return at aperitif time, although this type of connection offers little time to explore the area. It is also possible to reach Diafani by bus from Pigadia, but the lines are not very developed and the frequencies are limited, as if the service did not want to disturb the blissful isolation of this corner of paradise.

Where is located Diafani

Diafani is located in the northernmost part of Karpathos and is about 70 kilometres from the island's airport, a journey time of almost two hours on a well-paved but winding road. The distance to Pigadia, the island's capital, is also not insignificant: it is exactly 50 kilometres and takes about one hour and 15 minutes.
