The island of Karpathos enjoys a mild climate all year round, with winters that are never too cold and summers that are long and pleasant, thanks in part to the wind that naturally cools it down. The hottest months are naturally from June to September, but average temperatures hardly ever exceed 30 degrees. Of course, the temperature can rise even higher, but the feeling of warmth is never oppressive, the heat is dry and the wind blows more or less constantly. Also to be taken into account is the fact that it hardly ever rains in summer, which is great news for those who go on summer holidays and are afraid of a few rainy days.
In winter, temperatures on Karpathos are around 10 degrees Celsius. You will not run the risk of snowfall and frost as in the rest of Europe, but be aware that you will not be able to spend your days on the beach, the temperature is too low anyway. In contrast to summer, rainfall is frequent at this time of year: the average in January is 15 rainy days per month.
As for the water temperature on Karpathos, although in winter it is well below 20 degrees, in August it peaks at 26-27 degrees, making bathing in the sea very pleasant.

Karpathos is a destination purely devoted to summer tourism, so let’s start by making it clear that in winter the island has very little to offer. You will find almost everything closed, few people on the streets and, needless to say, the beaches will be practically unusable due to the weather. The Greek winter is certainly milder than ours, but it is certainly not a good time to visit the island, also considering that airlines usually suspend flights to Karpathos in winter (except Aegean Airlines, which has to guarantee territorial continuity being the Greek national airline).
We can, however, say that Karpathos starts to wake up around mid-April: a good idea to visit Karpathos could be to take advantage of the Easter long weekend (years in which it falls from 10 April onwards) or even better the May Day long weekend. But even in these cases, swimming in the sea will be reserved only for the most courageous: the water is still very cold, although on clear days with calm winds, temperatures already reach 25 degrees Celsius. You can, however, spend beautiful days on the beach lying in the sun and relaxing, perhaps renting a car or moped, taking advantage of the very low prices in the low season.
The peak months for a trip to Karpathos are therefore June, July and August. In these cases it depends on what you are looking for from a holiday: June is still a low season month but the days are the longest ever, on the other hand the water is still cold but the bars and restaurants will all be open, so it can be a good idea to visit Karpathos. July and August are the months that see the most tourists arriving on the island, with all the pluses and minuses that this entails: while you have the feeling that you are not alone and that you have not landed in a dead place, hotel and flight prices rise dramatically and the beaches are more crowded, although you will never find the crowds of some of the more mass-tourist destinations.
September is also a great month for a trip to Karpathos: the days are still warm and sunny, the sea temperature is the highest of the year, and at the same time the August crowds have died down, resulting in lower hotel and flight prices. It could be the ideal destination to extend your summer holiday by a week!
June, August and July are sunniest months of the year. During that months, from sunrise to sunset there are 13 total sunshine hours in Karpathos. In December and January sunshine hours are reduced to 3.
