Therma beach is one of the most unique and fascinating experiences on Kos, located on the south-eastern coast of the Dodecanese island. This 200-metre volcanic beach is distinguished by its natural thermal springs that gush directly from the sand and rocks, creating pools of hot water that reach temperatures of up to 50°C.
The name ‘Therma’ comes from ancient Greek and literally means ‘hot’, referring to the geothermal properties that characterise this extraordinary place. The thermal waters are rich in beneficial minerals such as sulphur, magnesium and potassium, traditionally prized for their therapeutic and relaxing properties.
The beach is about 12 kilometres from Kos town and is one of the most special and sought-after beaches on Kos for travellers seeking an authentic experience. The combination of crystal-clear sea water and natural thermal springs creates a unique thermal contrast.
Reaching Therma beach is relatively easy thanks to its accessible location on the south-eastern coast of Kos. Car hire is the most convenient option for visiting this particular beach, allowing you to easily transport towels and everything you need to enjoy the thermal waters.
From Kos airport, the drive takes about 20 minutes following the coastal road south through Psalidi and Agios Fokas. The road is completely paved and well signposted, with clear signs for ‘Therma Beach’ in the last few kilometres.
Free parking is located about 50 metres from the beach and is available under tamarisk trees that provide natural shade for cars. During the summer months, especially at weekends, the car park can fill up quickly in the middle of the day.
Public transport connects Therma with Kos town via local buses that operate mainly during the summer season. The service has a limited frequency with trips every 2-3 hours, making it necessary to carefully plan your time on the beach.
The area of Agios Fokas is the closest base to stay near the beach of Therma, offering several accommodation facilities only 3 kilometres away. This quiet coastal resort has boutique hotels and flats with sea views that combine modern comforts with a relaxing atmosphere.
Spa facilities in the area often include spa services that utilise the properties of the local geothermal waters. Many hotels offer specialised wellness treatments and private thermal pools, ideal for prolonging the relaxing experience even after returning from the beach.
The Psalidi area, located about 5 kilometres from Therma beach, offers a greater variety of restaurants and tourist services. This area is particularly popular with families for its organised sandy beaches and shallow waters.
