Rhodes is a very large island: about 80 km separate the northern tip of the island from its southern end. It is therefore a good idea to choose carefully where to stay in order to avoid spending most of the holiday in a car moving here and there.
The good news is that all the resorts are concentrated along the east coast of the island, in the 50 km from Rhodes town to Lindos. The west coast is battered by the meltemi and is almost ignored by tourists. It may be interesting to see for a break from the more crowded places, but it is not an ideal area to stay.
Of the resorts on the east coast, some are more suited to young people on the prowl, others to couples on a romantic getaway, while others cater for all tastes and needs.
Here is a mini-guide to where to stay in Rhodes that will help you find the most suitable resort and hotel for the type of holiday you dream of.

Sleeping in Rhodes Town is the ideal choice for those who, even on a beach holiday, don’t want to miss out on city life. In fact, the island’s capital is a very lively city, full of opportunities for cultural visits, shopping and nightlife.
Very close to the airport, it is perfect for those staying in Rhodes for a short time and then moving on to other islands, for those who want a fixed base from which to travel by bus or with organised tours and for those who just don’t want to move.
If, on the other hand, you want a base from which to leave every day for day visits, Rhodes Town may not be the best choice given its location on the northern tip of the island.
As for accommodation, there is something for all tastes and budgets.

The town of Lindos is undoubtedly the most beautiful on the island. It is a picture-postcard Rhodes, the one that most embodies the tourist imagery of the Greek island: a cascade of white cottages clinging to the slopes of a hill that spills into an unforgivingly blue sea. At the top of the hill stands a medieval fortress that holds within it the thousand-year-old treasures of the acropolis.
Although now a popular tourist destination, Lindos has retained its charm and is the ideal place to stay if you are looking for romantic spots, traditional tavernas and a mix of beaches and cultural attractions.
The choice of accommodation in Lindos is very wide, both in terms of quantity and variety, with something to suit all budgets. In the small town centre there are guesthouses, studios and small family-run hotels – look here if you want to experience the magical atmosphere of Lindos to the full. If, on the other hand, you prefer more modern hotels and all-inclusive resorts, move a little further out.
Faliraki is a typical small town that developed as a result of the tourism boom. No historical attractions and little romance, but on the other hand you will find beautiful beaches, a wide choice of hotels and flats of all prices and an impressive array of shops, bars, restaurants, playgrounds and discos.
It is recommended both for families with small children (the town beach has shallow waters that allow safe swimming and playing) and for young people looking for nightlife (Faliraki is famous throughout Europe for its clubs and beach parties).
Only 6 kilometres from Faliraki, Afandou is a whole other world, where the din of the discos does not reach. It is the oldest village on the island and today an ideal destination for slow tourism that loves tranquillity and local food and wine specialities.
It cannot compete with the more famous resorts in terms of the number of hotels and flats, but the variety is good, ranging from simple budget hotels and flats with basic services to exclusive villas and 5-star resorts.
An alternative to Lindos for those seeking romance and relaxation without tourist crowds is the small town of Kolymbia, south of Afandou. The town centre is located inland while accommodation for tourists is concentrated in the waterfront area.
It is a good compromise between amenities and charm, the latter due in large part to the pretty little harbour animated during the day by fishermen returning from work and at night by tourists sitting at the tables of the open-air bars for an after-dinner drink.
Mid- to high-end villas and hotels predominate, with a good number of adults-only spas ideal for a couple’s holiday.
