Kefalonia Airport ‘Anna Pollatou’ (IATA code: EFL) is the main air access point to the island of Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands of Greece.
Located on the Livathos peninsula in the south-west of the island, the airport is just 8 km from the capital Argostoli, offering convenient access to the island’s main attractions.
Kefalonia Airport mainly serves heavy seasonal traffic, with numerous charter and scheduled flights during the summer season. From Athens, Kefalonia Airport can be reached with a flight of just 45 minutes, while from Thessaloniki the flight time is about one hour. For international travellers, direct flights are available from many European cities, with a flight time varying from 2 to 4 hours depending on the origin.
Despite its relatively small size, Kefalonia Airport offers all essential services for travellers in a cosy environment that reflects the relaxed atmosphere of the island. The modern facility has an efficient passenger terminal that handles around 500,000 visitors per year, most of them during the period from May to October, when the island comes alive with tourists attracted by the beautiful white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea.
The airport’s convenient location allows visitors to quickly immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Kefalonia, characterised by spectacular mountain landscapes, traditional villages and the famous beaches of Myrtos, Antisamos and Skala, which can be reached in less than an hour’s drive.
The public bus service connects the airport with Argostoli, the capital of the island. Buses operate mainly to coincide with the arrival of flights, especially during the summer season. The bus stop is located just outside the arrivals terminal, and the journey to Argostoli takes about 15-20 minutes.
It is important to note that the frequency of buses is limited, especially during the off-season, so it is advisable to check the timetable in advance on the official Kefalonia Public Transport website or ask for information at the tourist desk inside the airport.
Official taxis are available at the exit of the arrivals terminal and are the most convenient option to reach your destination quickly. The fare to Argostoli is around €25-30 and the journey takes 15 minutes in normal traffic conditions. For other locations on the island, the cost varies depending on the distance.
During the high season, it is advisable to book a taxi in advance, especially if arriving during peak hours when availability may be limited. Many hotels also offer a transfer service on request.
Renting a car is definitely the best option for exploring Kefalonia, given the mountainous nature of the island and the distribution of tourist attractions. Several car rental companies have offices at the airport, including international and local operators.
Prices vary significantly between high and low season, with prices skyrocketing during July and August. It is therefore highly advisable to book in advance during the summer to ensure availability and the best rates.
