Egremni Beach is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of Lefkada and the entire Ionian Sea. Located on the south-western coast of the island, this magnificent stretch of sand and white pebbles stretches over 2.5 kilometres along a coastline of rare beauty. Its crystal-clear waters, ranging from deep turquoise to Caribbean blue, have made Egremni one of the most photographed landscapes in Greece.
The very name of the beach derives from the Greek ‘Εγκρεμνή’, meaning ‘cliff’ or ‘precipice’, a reference to the imposing limestone cliffs that surround the bay. These majestic geological formations, which rise more than 200 metres above sea level, create a breathtaking contrast to the white sand and blue waters. The unique morphology of the area, shaped over millennia by the combined action of wind and sea, gives Egremni an almost primordial atmosphere.
The recent history of Egremni was marked by the devastating earthquake of 17 November 2015, which radically transformed access to the beach. The seismic event caused extensive landslides along the coast, destroying the original road and the 300 steps that allowed access to the beach by land. After years of total inaccessibility, reconstruction work was completed in 2021, with a new, safer and stronger metal staircase that restored the possibility for visitors to reach this paradise on foot.
Egremni’s remote location, some 40 kilometres from Lefkada town and 4 kilometres from the village of Athani, guarantees an atmosphere of tranquillity and isolation that sets it apart from the island’s more touristy beaches. For those wishing to explore other wonders of the area, Porto Katsiki is just a few kilometres away, making it possible to combine a visit to two of Lefkada’s most beautiful beaches.

Accessing Egremni beach requires some physical effort, but the options available in 2025 allow different types of travellers to reach this natural wonder. Post-earthquake reconstruction has restored the possibility of access by land, alongside the increasingly popular alternative of boat excursions.
By car is the most autonomous and flexible option. From Lefkada town, the drive of about 40 kilometres takes about an hour along winding mountain roads. The paved road, completely rebuilt after the earthquake, passes through landscapes of centuries-old olive trees and traditional villages before reaching the signposted junction near Athani. The last few kilometres are characterised by sharp bends and significant gradients, requiring particular care when driving. The pay car park (around €10) is 1.5 kilometres from the start of the steps, necessitating a walk on a downhill path before tackling the actual steps.
The descent on foot from the car park to the beach is a challenge that should not be underestimated. After the 1.5-kilometre walk on a sloping dirt path, the 420-step metal staircase rebuilt in 2021 begins. The structure, which is much safer than its predecessor, has been anchored solidly to the rock and equipped with rockfall protection nets. The descent takes about 30-40 minutes, while the ascent can take up to an hour, especially in the hottest hours. It is essential to wear appropriate footwear, bring plenty of water and plan the ascent during the cooler hours of the day.

The area around Egremni offers accommodation for those who wish to stay in tranquillity, away from the more touristy resorts of Lefkada. The choice of accommodation depends on preferences between modern comforts and traditional authenticity.
The village of Athani is an ideal base for visiting Egremni. Located just 4 kilometres from the beach, this small mountain village retains the authentic atmosphere of the Ionian hinterland. Accommodation ranges from small family pensions run by locals to panoramic villas overlooking the western sea. Advantages include proximity to both Egremni and Porto Katsiki, the presence of several traditional taverns and the opportunity to experience the local pace of life. Accommodation facilities are mainly holiday homes and independent flats, ideal for those seeking independence and contact with nature.
The area of Vasiliki offers more amenities and a lively maritime atmosphere. The natural wind-protected harbour is popular for water sports, especially windsurfing. Accommodation includes boutique seafront hotels, traditional studios in the centre of the village and resorts with spa and wellness facilities. The strategic location makes it possible to reach Egremni by sea on daily excursions, while access by car takes approximately 30 minutes.
Egremni stretches along the south-western coast of Lefkada, about 39 kilometres from Lefkada town, 16 kilometres from Vasiliki and 37 kilometres from Nidri.
