Nestled at the foot of a majestic white cliff that plunges into the deep blue Ionian Sea, Porto Katsiki is one of the most photographed and popular beaches in Greece. Located on the south-western coast of the island of Lefkada, this beach has become a symbol of natural beauty that attracts visitors from all over the world. The contrast between the white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters and imposing limestone cliffs creates a setting of rare beauty that makes it one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece.

The name ‘Porto Katsiki’ literally means ‘Port of the Goats’, a reference to the fact that in the past only goats were able to reach this inaccessible part of the island. Today, thanks to a staircase of about 100 steps, it is possible to descend from the top of the cliff to the sandy shore, where an unforgettable bathing experience awaits you. Despite its popularity, the beach retains a wild and unspoilt charm, especially during the early morning or late afternoon hours.

How to get to Porto Katsiki

Reaching this natural wonder requires some planning. Porto Katsiki is about 45 km from the town of Lefkada (the island’s capital) and about 35 km from the lively tourist village of Nidri. The drive from Lefkada town takes about an hour via scenic but sometimes winding roads through the mountainous hinterland of the Ionian island.

By Car

Hiring a car is the most convenient option for visiting Porto Katsiki and the other beaches of Lefkada. Ample paid parking is available at the top of the cliff. From here, you will have to tackle the famous concrete staircase of about 100 steps that leads to the beach below. The descent is relatively easy, but the ascent can be challenging, especially during the hottest hours of the day. By boat

An attractive alternative is to reach Porto Katsiki by sea. During the high season (June to September), regular boat excursions depart from the island’s main tourist centres such as Nidri and Vassiliki. These excursions often include stops at other famous beaches such as Egremni and offer a unique perspective on the majesty of the cliffs. Many visitors combine these excursions with other activities on Lefkada for a complete experience.

By bus

During the high season, a bus service operates between Lefkada Town and Porto Katsiki with one or two daily runs. Timetables may vary, so it is advisable to check with the local tourist office or on the official Lefkada transport website.

The beach and its features

The Porto Katsiki beach stretches for about 500 metres at the foot of the cliff and has fine sand mixed with white pebbles. This combination, together with the crystal-clear waters, creates spectacular shades of blue and turquoise that vary depending on the sunlight.

The beach is partially organised: in the central part you will find sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, while the ends remain free for those who prefer to bring their own equipment. A small kiosk on the beach offers cool drinks and snacks, but it is still advisable to take water and provisions with you, especially if you intend to stay the whole day. Like many of the beaches on the Ionian Islands, Porto Katsiki offers a perfect balance of amenities and natural beauty.

The waters are generally calm in the mornings, while in the afternoons they tend to become choppier due to winds blowing from the west. These winds create ideal conditions for windsurfers, but can make swimming more challenging. The depth increases rapidly, making it less suitable for small children or those who cannot swim well.

One aspect to bear in mind is that the beach is shaded in the late afternoon due to the high cliffs above it. This can be an advantage on hot days, but it also means that the sun leaves the beach earlier than in other beach resorts on the island.

What to do in the surroundings

A visit to Porto Katsiki can easily be combined with exploring other attractions in the south-western part of Lefkada:

Lefkada is also an excellent base for exploring other Ionian islands such as Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos, easily reached by ferry from Lefkada.
