Lefkada Town is the beating heart of the Ionian island of the same name, a charming capital that has been welcoming visitors with its unique architecture since 1684. Located in the northern part of the island, only 20 minutes from Aktion/Preveza airport, this picturesque town is distinguished by its characteristic two-storey houses clad in coloured sheet metal, a special earthquake-proofing system introduced during British rule after the fire of 1825.

Lefkada Town overlooks the open sea on one side and the picturesque Lefkada Lagoon on the other, a protected natural area of international importance that is home to rare species of migratory birds such as small herons, wild ducks and swans. This dual exposure gives the capital a special charm, with two completely different atmospheres that blend harmoniously into the urban fabric.

The historic centre develops around the Agora, the pedestrian zone where the main businesses and most significant monuments are concentrated. The narrow streets branching off from the main square lead to Baroque churches and Venetian buildings, tangible evidence of the four centuries of Serenissima rule that have left an indelible mark on the local architecture.

Lefkada Town ‘s strategic location makes it the ideal starting point for exploring the entire island, from the famous beaches on the west coast to the picturesque villages inland, as well as for visiting neighbouring islands such as Kefalonia and Ithaca.

Things to do in Lefkada Town

The remains of the Fortress of St Maura

Exploring Lefkada Town offers an interesting journey through history, architecture and local traditions. The main attractions are concentrated in the old town, which is easily accessible on foot, while in the immediate surroundings are some of the island’s most significant monuments.

Church of Agios Nikolaos

The Church of Agios Nikolaos represents one of the finest examples of Baroque religious architecture in Lefkada. Built in the early 18th century, this magnificent church is located in the centre of the town market and is a landmark for worshippers and visitors alike. The interior houses a spectacular carved wooden iconostasis and numerous icons created by the most important Greek hagiographers.

The church is of particular importance to the local community, not only from a religious but also from a cultural point of view. Indeed, behind the presbytery is the tomb of the national poet Aristotelis Valaoritis, a prominent figure of the Greek Risorgimento and a symbol of Lefkada’s cultural identity.

Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni

Just 3 kilometres from the town, heading west towards the village of Tsoukalades, is the Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni, the most important religious centre on the island of Lefkada. Situated on a verdant hilltop, this ancient monastery offers a breathtaking view of the town, the beach of Agios Ioannis and the surrounding lagoons.

The history of the monastery has its roots in antiquity, when a temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis stood on the site. According to tradition, it was here that disciples of the Apostle Paul preached Christianity to the Lefkadites in 63 AD. The present monastery was founded in 1634, but after a devastating fire in 1887, it was completely rebuilt maintaining the original layout.

The complex houses an ecclesiastical museum with rare Byzantine icons and ancient manuscripts, a small naval museum with models of traditional boats, and in the garden there is also a quaint zoo where the monks take care of various domestic and exotic animals. Our Lady Faneromeni is revered as the patron saint and protector of the island, and every year on the Monday of the Holy Spirit, a large religious festival is celebrated that attracts pilgrims from all over the region.

Church of Agios Dimitrios

In the heart of the old town, the Church of Agios Dimitrios is another important place of worship that testifies to the spiritual richness of Lefkada. This church, characterised by the typical architecture of the Ionian Islands, preserves inside precious icons and sacred furnishings that tell of centuries of popular devotion.

The religious building fits harmoniously into the surrounding urban fabric, surrounded by the typical colourful houses that give the neighbourhood a special atmosphere. The church is a landmark not only for the faithful but also for those who want to understand the island’s Orthodox tradition.

Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Lefkada is located within a modern cultural centre in the heart of the town and houses a valuable collection of artefacts documenting the long history of the island. The archaeological evidence ranges from the Neolithic to Roman times, offering visitors a journey through millennia of civilisation.

Among the most significant exhibits are ceramics, coins, jewellery and everyday objects illustrating the life of the ancient inhabitants of Lefkada. Particular attention is paid to findings from ancient Nirikos, the island’s first capital located about two and a half kilometres from the current centre.

St. Maura Fortress

At the entrance to the town, on the road coming from the mainland, stand the remains of the 14th century St. Maura Fortress. This imposing defensive structure testifies to the strategic importance of Lefkada in controlling the southern Adriatic trade routes.

The fortress, which has withstood numerous sieges and attacks over the centuries, is today an interesting example of medieval military architecture. From its walls one can admire the characteristic movable bridge connecting the island to the mainland, unique among Greek islands.

Lefkada Lagoon

The Lefkada Lagoon constitutes one of the capital’s most fascinating natural attractions. This internationally important wetland area stretches along the city’s eastern coastline and is a unique ecosystem where birdwatchers can enjoy birdwatching and observe numerous species of migratory birds.

During the different seasons, the lagoon is home to small herons, wild ducks, swans and many other species that find an ideal habitat here for a stopover during migration. Paths winding along the banks offer pleasant walks immersed in nature, just a few minutes from the town centre.

Beaches in and around Lefkada Town

Lefkada Town offers easy access to some of the island’s most beautiful beaches, all located within a short distance from the town centre. These beaches are an ideal choice for those who stay in the capital and wish to alternate cultural discovery with seaside relaxation without having to travel long distances.

The beach of Agios Ioannis is the main bathing attraction in the immediate vicinity of the city, just 2 kilometres from the centre. This magnificent tongue of golden sand and small pebbles stretches for about three kilometres along the northern coast of the island, offering crystal-clear waters of a vivid blue that has earned it the Blue Flag award. The beach is particularly popular with water sports enthusiasts thanks to the constant winds that create ideal conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

The Myloi (Miloi) section is the most characteristic section of Agios Ioannis, easily recognisable by the presence of three ancient windmills that stand on the beach. Two of these mills are in ruins while the third has been renovated and converted into an atmospheric bar. This particular area offers a romantic atmosphere and is one of the most popular photo locations on the island.

The beach of Kastro (Gyra) is located at the opposite end of Agios Ioannis, only a five-minute drive from the town. This white-sand beach with crystal-clear waters is less crowded than other beach destinations, making it perfect for those seeking tranquillity and less crowded areas. Kastro’s location offers spectacular sunsets and, on windy days, excellent conditions for relaxation in an almost wild environment.

All the beaches in Lefkada town offer quality facilities with beach bars, restaurants and water sports equipment rental. Free parking is available along the coastal road, although during the summer months it is advisable to arrive early to find space easily.

Where to stay in Lefkada Town

Lefkada Town offers several accommodation options for those wishing to stay in the heart of the island, benefiting from all the urban amenities while remaining within easy reach of the main attractions. The choice of the capital as a base is particularly suitable for those who want to experience the authentic Greek atmosphere, away from the more crowded tourist areas.

The historic centre is the most characteristic area to stay, with small boutique hotels and family pensions housed in renovated traditional buildings. These accommodations allow you to fully immerse yourself in local life, with taverns, cafés and handicraft shops within walking distance. The central location also makes it easy to walk to all the city’s main attractions.

The harbour area offers more modern alternatives, with facilities overlooking the lagoon and enjoying splendid panoramic views. This area is particularly convenient for those arriving by their own means or intending to rent a car to explore the island, due to the presence of parking facilities and its proximity to the main road leading to the most famous beaches.

Aktion/Preveza Airport (PVK) is only 30 kilometres from the city and is the main arrival point for international flights. During the summer season, the airport is served by direct flights from several European cities, while year-round connections to Athens via domestic flights are available. From the airport terminal, it is possible to reach Lefkada town in about 30 minutes by car via a scenic road that runs along the Amvrakikos Gulf.

Road connections from mainland Greece are via the Ionian motorway (A5) to Preveza, then southwards to the connecting bridge. The presence of the movable bridge makes Lefkada easily accessible with all types of vehicles, from simple scooters to camper vans.

For those who prefer sea transport, there are ferries from Kefalonia and Ithaca that connect with ports on the east coast of the island, from where one can reach the city in a short time. In addition, direct ferry connections to Corfu and other Ionian destinations operate during the summer.
