Navagio Beach is undoubtedly Zakynthos’ most iconic attraction, an extraordinary bay that has captivated the entire world with its crystal-clear turquoise waters and the striking rusty shipwreck resting on its white sand. Known internationally as Shipwreck Beach or Smugglers Cove, this natural wonder was created by the shipwreck of the MV Panagiotis in 1980, transforming a simple rocky inlet into one of the most photographed beaches in the Mediterranean.
The exceptional beauty of this bay lies in the perfect combination of natural elements and the history that has shaped it. The white limestone cliffs rise majestically to a height of more than 200 metres, creating a natural amphitheatre that protects the small beach from currents and winds, while the white pebbles polished by the sea reflect the sunlight, giving the water that characteristic electric blue colour that has made Navagio famous throughout the world.
The beach owes its current name to the Greek word ‘navagio’, which literally means shipwreck, in memory of the event that led to its creation. Before 1980, in fact, this cove was known as Agios Georgios Sta Gremna (St. George of the Cliffs) and had no sandy accumulation, only sheer cliffs.
Today, the Shipwreck Beach is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Ionian Islands, attracting visitors from all over the world who wish to admire this unique natural spectacle and capture one of Greece’s most striking panoramas in their photographs.

Navagio is accessible exclusively by sea, and this feature contributes greatly to the charm and mystery surrounding this destination. There are no paths or roads to reach the beach by land, making the experience of getting there an integral part of the adventure. Currently, a landing ban has been in place since 2023 for safety reasons related to the risk of landslides from the cliffs above, but boats can approach the bay to admire the view and take photographs.
Boat excursions depart from three main ports on Zakynthos. The port of Vromi is the most popular choice among experienced visitors, located just a 10-minute boat ride from the beach of the Wreck. Smaller boats (maximum 50 passengers) depart from here, offering a more intimate experience and also allowing you to visit the western blue caves along the way. The cost of the excursion is around 30 euro and generally includes 3 bathroom stops during the 3-hour duration.
The port of St Nikolaos is an interesting alternative, located about 20 minutes by boat from Navagio. Small boats with a maximum of 50 passengers also depart from this port, with excursions lasting about 2½ hours and including a visit to the northern Blue Caves, where, however, bathing is prohibited for safety reasons.
For those who prefer comfort and do not have their own means of transport, the Port of Zakynthos offers excursions in large boats (150-300 passengers) that include a shuttle service to and from hotels. The sailing time is longer, about 1½ hours, but it is the most affordable option to reach this natural wonder.

The area around the Shipwreck Beach offers several accommodation options, each with its own particular characteristics to suit different travel needs. Choosing accommodation in this area of the island allows one to enjoy the tranquillity of the western coast of Zakynthos and to be relatively close to one of the island’s most spectacular attractions.
The village of Volimes is an ideal base for those wishing to explore the northern part of Zakynthos while maintaining an authentic and traditional atmosphere. This small village offers mainly traditional holiday homes and small family-run guesthouses run by locals, providing a more authentic experience of the island. The strategic location of Volimes makes it easy to reach both the vantage point of Navagio and the starting ports for boat excursions.
The west coast near Porto Vromi features a number of modern villas and holiday homes with sea views, ideal for those seeking modern comforts without sacrificing proximity to the wild nature of this part of the island. Many of these properties offer panoramic terraces from which to admire the spectacular sunsets that characterise this coastline.
For those who prefer a greater variety of services, the area of Alykes and Alykanas, although further away, offer a wider selection of hotels, resorts and flats, with the possibility of easily reaching the departure ports for Navagio via short trips by car or scooter.
Navagio beach is located on the north-western coast of Zakynthos, set in a bay protected by imposing white limestone cliffs. It is about 35 kilometres from Zakynthos town and can be reached by sea from the ports of Vromi (10 minutes), St Nikolaos (20 minutes) or the island's main port (90 minutes).
