Zakynthos Airport ‘Dionysios Solomos’ (IATA code: ZTH) is the main air access point to the island of Zakynthos, one of the most fascinating of the Ionian Islands. Located in Kalamaki, in the south-eastern part of the island, this airport is only 4 km from the centre of Zakynthos Town and a short distance from many of the island’s main tourist resorts.
Named after the Greek poet Dionysios Solomos, born in Zakynthos and author of the Greek national anthem, the airport handles a considerable volume of traffic, especially during the summer season when the island welcomes thousands of tourists attracted by its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking beaches. The airport’s strategic location makes it particularly convenient, with a transfer time of just 10 minutes by car to the city centre and about 15-20 minutes to the main tourist resorts such as Laganas and Kalamaki.
During the high season (May to October), Zakynthos airport welcomes numerous charter and scheduled flights from various European cities, in addition to the regular connections with Athens (approximately 45 minutes flight time) that operate throughout the year. The modern structure, enlarged and renovated in recent years, can efficiently handle the considerable influx of visitors who choose Zakynthos as their holiday destination to admire attractions such as the famous Shipwreck Beach or the Island of Marathonissi.
The public bus service connects Zakynthos airport with the town centre with regular runs during the tourist season. The journey takes about 15 minutes and the buses are generally synchronised with flight arrivals, although it is advisable to check up-to-date timetables, especially in the low season when runs may be less frequent.
Once in the centre of Zakynthos, from the central bus station it is possible to take connections to other places on the island such as Laganas, Tsilivi, Argassi and Kalamaki. The public transport system of Zakynthos, although not extremely capillary, effectively covers the main tourist areas and is an economical option for getting around the island.
Taxis are available in abundance outside the arrivals terminal and offer a convenient and direct service to any destination on the island. The price for a ride from the airport to the centre of Zakynthos is around €12-15, while the journey to places like Laganas can cost €15-20 and to Tsilivi €20-25.
During the high season, despite the good number of taxis available, long queues may form. To avoid waiting, you can book a private transfer in advance.
An alternative to TAXIs is to book in advance a private transfer to or from Zakynthos Airport airport. A driver will pick you up at the airport arrivals (thus avoiding taxi queues), at your hotel or wherever you prefer, to take you to the desired address.
