Patras Airport

The airport of Patras, officially known as Araxos Airport (IATA code: GPA), is the hub for the city of Patras and the entire north-western region of the Peloponnese.

Located approximately 45 km south-west of the centre of Patras, near the village of Araxos and a short distance from the picturesque beach of Kalogria, this regional airport functions as a military base of the Greek Air Force that is partially used for civil flights, mainly during the summer tourist season.

During the summer season, in fact, the airport receives direct flights from European cities such as Rome, London, Amsterdam, Vienna and various German and Scandinavian destinations, operated mainly by low-cost and charter companies such as Ryanair, TUI, Transavia and Eurowings.

Despite its small size and basic infrastructure, Araxos Airport offers basic services for travellers, including small shops, cafeterias, ATMs and car rental offices. Although not comparable to the modern terminals of Greece’s larger tourist airports, the facility provides a functional welcome for visitors heading to Patras, the beaches of the Ionian Coast, archaeological sites such as Olympia or other destinations in the western Peloponnese.

How to get to the centre of Patras

Bus

The public bus service connecting Araxos Airport with Patras is limited and operates mainly during the summer season to coincide with the arrival of international flights. KTEL buses connect the airport with the central bus station of Patras, from where it is possible to continue to other destinations in the Peloponnese or mainland Greece.

The bus stop is located outside the arrivals terminal. The journey to the centre of Patras takes approximately 50-60 minutes. The frequency of journeys is limited and the timetables are synchronised with the arrivals of the main charter flights, so it is advisable to check the availability of the service in advance, especially if travelling outside the peak tourist season.

For those arriving on evening flights or during low season, the bus service may not be available, making it necessary to resort to taxis or private transfers.

Taxi

The fare to the centre of Patras is about 70-80€ during the day and 90-100€ during the night (00:00-5:00), with a journey time of about 45-50 minutes in normal traffic conditions. For other popular destinations such as the archaeological zone of Olympia (around 90 km) or Kalogria Beach (5 km), fares vary around 120€ and 15€ respectively.

Given the considerable distance between the airport and the city, it is advisable to agree on the price before departure. During the high season, taxi availability may be limited, especially when several flights arrive at the same time, so it is advisable to book a private transfer service in advance, especially if travelling in a group or with heavy luggage.

Car hire

Renting a car is the best option if you intend to explore the Peloponnese, especially considering the airport’s relatively isolated location and the wealth of attractions spread over a wide geographical area. The airport is home to several car rental agencies, both international and local, with offices located within or in close proximity to the terminal.

The road from the airport to Patras is well signposted and mainly follows the E55/E65 national road. The journey takes about 45-50 minutes and is relatively easy, even for those unfamiliar with Greek roads. The rented car also offers the opportunity to freely explore the numerous beaches of the Ionian coast, the archaeological sites of the Peloponnese and the picturesque villages of the hinterland, many of which are difficult to access by public transport.
