Syvota (or Sivota) is a charming coastal village located in Epirus, on the north-western coast of mainland Greece, a short distance from the border with Albania. This picturesque harbour, nestled in a natural bay overlooking the Ionian Sea, is surrounded by a myriad of verdant islets that create a picture-postcard landscape of turquoise waters and hidden coves. Known as the ‘Caribbean of Greece‘, Syvota boasts some of the clearest waters and most scenic beaches in western Greece.
Syvota’s unique geography, with its succession of headlands and coves, has created a privileged microclimate that guarantees warm but breezy summers and particularly mild springs. The village, with its cafes and restaurants overlooking the marina where yachts and small boats moor, has retained its authentic character as a fishing village despite the tourist development of recent decades.
Unlike other better-known coastal resorts, Syvota offers a more relaxed and less crowded experience, while being easily accessible from Igoumenitsa, one of the main ports of entry to Greece.

The real wealth of Syvota lies in its beautiful beaches, each with its own distinctive character. The conformation of the coastline, which is indented and full of coves, offers a surprising variety of bathing environments, from sandy shores to more intimate, rocky coves.
Bella Vraka beach is certainly the most iconic and most photographed beach in Syvota. This strip of fine white sand connects the mainland to the islet of Mourtemeno, creating an impressive ‘natural bridge’ that emerges at low tide, allowing it to be crossed on foot. The turquoise and transparent waters surrounding it take on changing hues thanks to the white sandy seabed. The beach is partially organised, with a small beach bar and umbrella rental on the main part, while the part on the islet remains wilder and more natural, ideal for those seeking more tranquillity.
About 2 km south of Syvota is Mikri Ammos, one of the most popular beaches in the area. This wide expanse of golden sand is framed by a pine forest that provides natural shade. The waters are shallow, with a transparency that allows the sandy seabed to be clearly seen even several metres from the shore, making it particularly suitable for families with children. The beach is well equipped with sun beds, parasols and several bars serving light lunches and refreshments throughout the day.
Mega Ammos beach, located a short distance from the centre of Syvota, is a long, pale sandy shoreline with deep blue crystal-clear waters. It is the largest and most comfortable beach in the area, spacious and well organised with all facilities. Its privileged location, close to the village but sufficiently secluded, makes it ideal for those seeking comfort without sacrificing natural beauty. The beach is perfect for water sports, with the possibility of hiring canoes and pedal boats to explore the surrounding coastline.
Zavia is a picturesque white pebble cove surrounded by dense Mediterranean vegetation that slopes down to the sea. Reached by a short walk along a scenic path, this more secluded beach offers a relaxing and intimate atmosphere. Its crystal-clear waters are a paradise for snorkelling, thanks to the wealth of marine life and exceptional visibility. The beach has retained a wild character, with minimal facilities, making it a perfect escape for those seeking tranquillity and naturalness.
The small cove known as Pisina (‘pool’ in Greek) bears this name for its exceptionally calm and clear waters, so much so that it resembles a natural swimming pool. Hidden among the rocks and accessible via a short path or by boat, this white pebble beach is one of Syvota’s hidden gems. Surrounded by cliffs, it offers natural shade during the hottest hours of the day. The variety of fish that inhabit its waters makes Pisina a paradise for snorkelling and underwater photography enthusiasts.
In the heart of the village is Gallikos Molos beach, a comfortable stretch of sand and pebbles with easy access to all the amenities of the centre. Particularly appreciated for its strategic location that allows one to alternate moments of relaxing bathing with strolls through the village’s shops and taverns. Despite its proximity to the centre, the waters remain surprisingly clear, and the view of the harbour and surrounding islands adds to its charm.

Syvota is not just sea and beaches. The picturesque marina is the beating heart of the village, where you can stroll among the fishermen’s boats and luxurious yachts, observing the peaceful pace of local life. In the evenings, the numerous restaurants and tavernas that line the marina come alive, offering the opportunity to enjoy authentic Greek cuisine based on fresh fish and local specialities such as Epirus feta cheese, considered one of the best in Greece.
One of the most popular activities in Syvota is a boat tour of the surrounding islands. Numerous local operators offer day trips that will take you to explore the beautiful bays that are only accessible by sea, such as the picturesque Blue Lagoon with its deep turquoise waters, and the islands of Mavro Oros and Agios Nikolaos, where you can snorkel in crystal-clear waters and enjoy the tranquillity of unspoilt beaches.
For lovers of outdoor activities, hiking trails inland offer the opportunity to discover a hilly landscape full of centuries-old olive trees, natural springs and breathtaking views of the coastline. Particularly impressive is the path leading to the Monastery of Agioi Pateres, an ancient place of worship that dominates the surrounding landscape and offers spectacular views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding islands.
For a day of culture, you can visit the nearby archaeological site of Nekromanteion, the ancient oracle of the dead in Greek mythology, located about 30 km from Syvota. This mysterious site, where in antiquity it was believed possible to communicate with the dead, offers a fascinating window into the world of ancient Greek beliefs and rituals.
Syvota is strategically positioned for exploring the wonders of north-western Greece. We recommend hiring a car to discover the attractions in the surrounding area at your own pace. Just 25 km away is the bustling port city of Igoumenitsa, an important connection point to the Ionian Islands, where you can visit the Archaeological Museum and enjoy the atmosphere of an authentic, non-touristy Greek city.
Continuing north for about 50 km, you will reach the picturesque Acheron River, known in Greek mythology as one of the rivers of Hades. Today, this unspoilt natural environment offers the possibility of rafting, horse riding or simply relaxing walks along its verdant banks, immersing yourself in a landscape of rare beauty.
For nature lovers, the Vikos-Aoos National Park about 100 km from Syvota is a must-see. The Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest in the world, offers spectacular views and hiking trails for all levels. The Zagori region, with its characteristic stone villages and ancient arched bridges, is one of the most authentic and lesser-known areas of Greece.
History buffs should not miss a visit to the ancient city of Dodona, some 80 km from Syvota, home to the oldest oracle in Greece, whose origins date back to the 2nd millennium BC. The archaeological site includes a well-preserved theatre and the remains of the sanctuary of Zeus, in a natural setting of great beauty.
Syvota offers various accommodation solutions for all needs and budgets. The harbour area is the heart of the village, where you will find numerous small and medium-sized hotels, boutique hotels and tourist flats. Staying in this area will allow you to have all amenities at your fingertips, with restaurants, cafes and shops within walking distance, as well as enjoying the lively evening atmosphere and the view of the illuminated marina.
For those seeking more tranquillity, the hilly areas surrounding the village offer private villas and flats with breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and islands. Surrounded by olive trees, these accommodations provide privacy and silence while being only a few minutes’ drive from the centre and the beaches. Many have private swimming pools, a welcome convenience on hot days.
The area of Mikri Ammos, south of the centre, is perfect for families due to its proximity to the large sandy beach and shallow waters. Here you will find mainly tourist flats and small studio complexes, ideal for longer stays and for those who want some independence.
If you prefer space, privacy and the ability to prepare your own meals to a hotel holiday, book a holiday home at Syvota. We recommend a few below, but in this case we advise you to book early because houses and apartments for rent at Syvota are in high demand.
