Volos Airport ‘Nea Anchialos’ (IATA code: VOL) is the gateway to the beautiful region of Thessaly and the enchanting Sporades. The airport is located about 26 km south-west of Volos, the main port city of central Greece and an ideal starting point for exploring destinations such as the Meteors or Mount Olympus.
Despite its small size, Volos Airport is of strategic importance for tourism in central Greece and the Sporades Islands, with direct connections to several European cities during the summer and regular flights from Athens throughout the year. Its location makes it a convenient access point for those wishing to avoid the capital’s traffic or seek an alternative to the islands’ often more congested airports.
The public bus service is the cheapest way to reach Volos from the airport. The KTEL Magnesia line connects the airport to the city centre with runs synchronised with flight arrivals, especially during the summer season. The journey takes about 35-40 minutes.
It is advisable to check the updated timetable on the official website of the KTEL Magnesia company before travelling, as it varies according to the season and the days of the week. Once in Volos, from the central bus station it is possible to take connections to other places in central Greece or to the port, from where ferries to the Sporades islands depart.
The price for a ride from the airport to the centre of Volos is about 35-40€, while a ride to other locations such as Agria or Portaria can cost 45-50€. During the tourist season it is advisable to book a taxi in advance, especially if arriving at peak times or in conjunction with other flights.
Car hire is the most convenient option for exploring the region independently. Several car rental companies have offices in or near the airport. During the high season, it is strongly recommended to book your vehicle in advance to ensure availability and better rates.
To rent a car in Greece we always recommend comparing the rates of all companies with DiscoverCars because in our opinion it offers the best prices, allows cancellation up to 48 hours before rental and offers a very cheap comprehensive insurance policy.
Renting a car will allow you to easily visit not only Volos, but also the beautiful beaches of Pelion, traditional mountain villages and archaeological sites such as Demetrias. The road network in this region of Greece is well maintained, although some roads in the mountain villages can be narrow and winding.
The island of Skiathos is not directly accessible from Volos airport, but it is necessary to combine several means of transport. The most common route involves:
The total cost varies between 50-70€ per person. Alternatively, those wishing to visit Skiathos may consider landing directly at Skiathos Airport, which receives charter and scheduled flights during the summer season.
The spectacular Meteors, with their monasteries built on unique rock formations, are about 120 km from Volos Airport. The journey by car or taxi takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes and can cost around 100-120€ by taxi. It is also possible to take a bus from Volos to Kalampaka (the nearest town to the Meteors), but this requires first reaching the Volos bus station from the airport.
For those interested in visiting this UNESCO site, car rental is the most practical option, allowing you to organise your visit at your own pace.
Mount Pelion, with its traditional villages and beautiful beaches, is located east of Volos. To reach villages such as Portaria, Makrinitsa or Zagora from the airport, the taxi ride takes between 45-60 minutes (for western villages) to 90 minutes (for eastern villages) and costs between €50-80.
By public transport, one must first reach Volos and then take a local bus to the Pelion villages. Again, car hire is the most flexible option for exploring this magnificent mountainous area.
Agria, a pretty seaside resort a few kilometres from Volos, is about 30 km from the airport. The taxi ride takes about 35 minutes and costs around 40-45€. By public transport, you need to arrive in Volos and then take a local bus or taxi to Agria (about 10 minutes from Volos).
Alykes beach is only 6 km from the airport and is the nearest beach resort. The taxi ride takes just 10 minutes and costs about 15-20€. There are no direct public transport connections, so the options are taxi or car rental.
