Greece is located in south-eastern Europe and is bordered to the north and north-east by Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey, while to the south, east and west it has no land borders. There are three seas bordering it: the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea and the Sea of Crete.
It is one of the most mountainous European states. Approximately 80 per cent of its surface area exceeds 700 metres above sea level, with altitudes well above 2,000 metres in the Pindus mountain range. This mountain range branches off into the Peloponnese and many Aegean islands such as Crete. In mainland Greece, the high, steep peaks cut by canyons, such as The Meteors and Vikos Gorges, offer a spectacular landscape.
Mount Olympus is the highest peak in Greece at 2919 metres above sea level.
The Greek islands, the real speciality of Greece, cover one fifth of the country’s total surface area. There are more than 3000 of them, 227 of which are inhabited.
