The island of Samos stands out in the northern Aegean for the extraordinary variety of its coastline, where lush Mediterranean vegetation meets crystal-clear, emerald-green waters. Located only 2 kilometres from the Turkish coast, this Greek island offers more than 50 kilometres of coastline ranging from family-friendly, equipped bays to wild coves accessible only to the more adventurous.

The island’s mountainous terrain, dominated by Mount Kerkis (1,433 metres), creates unique microclimates that protect many beaches from northerly winds, while others become a paradise for windsurfers and kitesurfers. The crystal-clear waters maintain exceptional visibility down to a depth of 8-10 metres, providing snorkelling enthusiasts with unforgettable experiences.

From Tsamadou with its centuries-old pine forests to Kokkari, the realm of windsurfing, via the wild Seitani that can only be reached by sea, each beach tells a different story. The best time to explore the coasts of Samos is from May to October, with optimal conditions between June and September when the sea temperature reaches 25°C and the summer Meltemi ensures constant winds for sailing sports.

The proximity to Turkey adds a special charm, with glimpses of the Anatolian coastline on clear days, while the wealth of marine life includes the rare Mediterranean monk seals.

Tsamadou Beach is undoubtedly one of the most photographed and popular bays in the entire North Aegean. Located just 3 kilometres from the picturesque village of Kokkari, this natural wonder stretches 600 metres into a spectacular bay surrounded by centuries-old pine forests and limestone cliffs that create an almost tropical ambience.

Access to the beach is via a scenic path that descends some 200 metres through the Mediterranean maquis, offering breathtaking views of the bay below. The crystal-clear waters with their blue-green reflections maintain exceptional visibility, making it an absolute paradise for snorkelling enthusiasts who can admire colourful fish and spectacular rock formations. The small white and grey pebbles on the seabed help to keep the water incredibly transparent.

Psili Ammos

The name ‘fine sand’ could not be more appropriate to describe this beautiful beach located on the south-east coast, just 9 kilometres from Vathy. Considered the most family-friendly beach in all of Samos, Psili Ammos stretches for over 500 metres with fine golden sand that gently slopes into shallow turquoise waters.

The sandy seabed and gradual depth allow children to play safely, while the natural protection offered by the surrounding cliffs makes the bay accessible even in adverse weather conditions. The strategic location just 2 kilometres from the Turkish coast offers fascinating views of Anatolia on particularly clear days. Facilities are complete with sunbeds, umbrellas and taverns nestled among the pine trees serving fresh fish specialities.

Kokkari

Kokkari beach is the beating heart of the island’s beach life, located opposite the famous fishing village that has retained its traditional Cycladic charm. This bay of fine pebbles mixed with sand stretches for about 800 metres, offering a perfect balance of natural beauty and modern amenities.

The blue-green waters of Kokkari are particularly popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers thanks to the constant thermal winds that blow from the north-west during the summer months. The seabed slopes rapidly, creating ideal conditions for experienced swimmers and water sports. The beach is fully equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas, while the numerous bars and restaurants along the promenade offer local cuisine and cocktails with sunset views, similar to the atmosphere on the Cyclades islands.

Potami

Situated on the north-western coast 35 kilometres from Vathy, Potami captivates visitors with its unique ‘number 3’ shape, created by a tongue of land jutting out into the sea, forming two distinct bays of extraordinary beauty. This wild and unspoilt beach stretches for over a kilometre with white pebbles and coarse sand.

The crystal-clear waters are particularly appreciated by divers for the wealth of marine life, while the northern winds create attractive surfing conditions. The real treasure of Potami are the famous natural waterfalls located only two kilometres from the beach. A well-marked path of about 45 minutes runs through plane and oak forests, leading to small natural lakes where you can bathe in cool fresh water, passing a small 16th century Byzantine chapel.

Lemonakia

A small hidden gem 12 kilometres from Vathy, Lemonakia owes its poetic name to the numerous lemon groves that historically characterised this area of the northern coastline. This sheltered bay of only 400 metres offers a perfect natural refuge when the north winds blow, thanks to the rocky conformation that protects it from the waves.

The beach harmoniously combines fine golden sand and pebbles polished by the sea, while the turquoise waters are ideal for families with children due to the gently sloping seabed. The high cliffs covered with Mediterranean vegetation create an intimate and cosy ambience, particularly at sunset when the colours are reflected in the calm waters of the bay.

Limnionas

Tucked away on the south-western coast at the foot of the majestic Mount Kerkis, Limnionas represents the perfect balance of unspoilt natural beauty and essential amenities. This golden sandy beach is surrounded by hills covered with ancient olive trees and Mediterranean maquis, creating a landscape reminiscent of the Ionian Islands.

The sheltered bay offers calm waters with blue and green reflections, particularly appreciated for their mild temperatures even in spring and autumn. The sandy seabed slopes gently, making it ideal for families, while the rocky ends offer excellent opportunities for snorkelling. The eponymous village of Limnionas, perched on the surrounding hills, retains an authentic atmosphere with traditional taverns serving local specialities prepared from garden produce.

Psili Ammos in Marathokambos

Located in the spectacular bay of Marathokambos on the south-western coast, this ‘golden sand‘ stretches 350 metres with fine sand with a golden sheen that inspired its name. Protected from the winds within the large natural bay, Psili Ammos (or Chrysi Ammos) offers relatively deep but crystal-clear waters, ideal for experienced swimmers and water sports enthusiasts.

Part of the beach is organised with full facilities, while the ends retain a wilder character for those seeking tranquillity. The strategic location in the bay of Marathokambos allows one to enjoy spectacular sunsets and easily explore the many hidden coves that can be reached on foot along coastal paths. Nearby, the village of Votsalakia offers excellent seafood restaurants and authentic accommodation.

Megalo Seitani

The beaches of Seitani represent the realm of Samos’ wildest nature, accessible only by sea or via a challenging 3.5-kilometre trekking path from Potami. The name derives from the Turkish ‘Şeytan’ (devil), a reference to the mysterious canyon behind, which on windy days produces eerie echoes and sounds.

Megalo Seitani, the larger of the two, offers 300 metres of coarse sand and pebbles in a bay perfectly protected by the mountains. The total absence of tourist facilities guarantees an experience of complete contact with wild nature, while the deep, clear waters are the habitat of the rare Mediterranean monk seals. Micro Seitani, smaller and more intimate, can only be reached by the more experienced via a rocky path that rewards with a cove of rare beauty where the silence is broken only by the sound of the waves.

Kambos

At three kilometres long, Kambos is the longest beach on Samos, an immense expanse of fine golden sand that stretches out in front of the majestic Mount Kerkis. Also known as Votsalakia, this beach is particularly popular with locals who frequent it during weekends and summer holidays.

The fine sand and shallow waters make it perfect for long romantic walks and for families with small children. The seabed slopes very gently, allowing one to walk in the water for tens of metres before reaching significant depths. The village of Votsalakia, which has developed over the last few decades, offers all the necessary amenities while maintaining a human scale and is the ideal starting point for exploring the western hinterland of the island.

Potokaki

Located a few kilometres from the famous Pythagorion, Potokaki is the most cosmopolitan and organised beach on Samos, with its 3 km of sand mixed with fine pebbles. Its proximity to the island’s main tourist centre guarantees comprehensive services and a lively nightlife that comes alive after sunset.

The beach is fully equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, trendy beach bars, restaurants and water sports centres offering kayaking, windsurfing and diving. The calm, shallow waters make it ideal for families, while the considerable length means that there is always a quiet spot even during the busiest tourist periods. The sunset from Potokaki is considered among the most beautiful on the island, with the sun setting behind the silhouettes of the Dodecanese islands.

Kerveli

This quiet beach on the east coast is one of Samos’ best-kept secrets, frequented mainly by local residents who appreciate its reserved and authentic atmosphere. Kerveli features white pebbles rounded by the sea and a seabed that quickly becomes sandy, creating ideal conditions for snorkelling.

Surrounded by lush pine forests reaching down to the sea, the beach offers natural shade and an atmosphere of absolute peace far from mass tourism.
