Reaching Alonissos requires a little more effort than on other Greek islands: there is no airport on the island and ferries are less frequent than on other more famous destinations. This very remoteness is one of the reasons for Alonissos‘ great charm.

In fact, it is not even that difficult to get to Alonissos. It is true that you have to make changes, and these inevitably entail more or less long waits and in some cases even an overnight stay in a town that you may have wanted to avoid, but there are fairly easy and affordable solutions.

Let us look at them together.

Flight to Skiathos + ferry to Alonissos

The easiest way to get to Alonissos is to take a direct flight to the island of Skiathos and from there a ferry to your final destination.

The sea crossing from Skiathos to Alonissos takes one to two hours depending on the type of ship you choose; of course the faster ones are also more expensive.

Flight to Thessaloniki + ferry to Alonissos

Another option is to take a flight to the city of Thessaloniki, which is located on mainland Greece and connected by direct flights of low-cost airlines. Hydrofoils to Alonissos depart daily from Thessaloniki and reach their destination in about four and a half hours.

Please note: hydrofoils to Alonissos from Thessaloniki generally leave in the morning, so if your flight arrives in the evening you should plan on staying overnight in the city.

It is also possible to take a bus from Thessaloniki to the port of Volos and from there embark on a ferry to Alonissos, but this is a somewhat inconvenient solution and with all the changes it will greatly increase the length of your trip, so we do not recommend it.

Flight to Athens + ferry to Alonissos

The Greek city with the widest offer of cheap flights is obviously Athens, so take a look at the prices of flights to the capital, which could be much cheaper than those to Skiathos or Thessaloniki.

Ferries to Alonissos (route to Skopelos/Skiathos) do not leave from the port of Piraeus but from the port of Agios Kostantinos, which can be reached from Athens airport by a direct bus. The duration of the transfer from the airport to the port is about two and a half hours; the same duration for the sea crossing from Agios Kostantinos to Alonissos.
